Summary
Carlos Leal Gomes is a retired Associate Professor with Habilitation of the Department of Earth Sciences, where he taught from the 1980s. He received his PhD in Sciences (Geology) from the University of Minho (1994) and his Habilitation in 2004.
He has studied granitic pegmatites and aplites — their internal structure, mineralogy and paragenesis — and their associated mineralisations, such as lithium, tantalum and niobium, gold and gemstones, in Portugal and in Portuguese-speaking countries such as Angola and Mozambique. His work includes Portugal's lithium resources, tourmalines and columbite-group minerals in pegmatites, the Santo António gold deposit (Penedono) and the sulphide mineralisation of the Cerdeirinha mine (Caminha).
He took part in the New Generation Storage project of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (2023–2025) and has presented the geology of gemstones and lithium to students and the public.
