João Zacarias Coutinho Machado

Summary

João Machado has been a student in the University of Minho PhD Programme in Geology – Geoconservation, Environmental Geology and Geological Resources since January 2026, supervised by Amélia Paula Marinho Reis and co-supervised by Renato Henriques.

His thesis addresses the integrated assessment of flood risk and adaptive resilience under climate change, with methods applied at municipal scale in the Cávado sub-region (CIM Cávado).

He works with geographic information systems and precipitation analysis applied to urban flood risk. With ICT researchers, he has assessed the flood risk potential of the River Este basin in Braga, combining return periods of maximum daily rainfall with hazard and vulnerability mapping.
