Jorge Manuel V. Pamplona

Summary

Jorge Pamplona is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, where he has taught since 1990, and has been a researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT) since 2014. He received his PhD in Geology, in the field of Structural Geology, from the University of Minho in 2001.

His research focuses on deformation in the Variscan Belt of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, on structures associated with the emplacement of granitic rocks and on field structural geology, which he also covers in structural geology and tectonics field guides. He also works in environmental geology and hydrogeology: water quality, acid mine drainage, thermal aquifer systems, flood risk and the geological-geotechnical characterisation of rock masses.

He has taken part in FCT-funded projects on environmentally relevant minerals in systems contaminated by acid drainage, at the nanoscale, and on the conservation and enhancement of monuments, and in the TERRAMATER project on the recovery of burnt areas. He supervises master's dissertations and doctoral theses in these fields and provides technical consultancy.
