Summary
Luís Gonçalves is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences. He graduated in Geology (1998) and completed an MSc in Prospecting and Evaluation of Geological Resources (2005) at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, with a dissertation on the Cenozoic deposits of eastern Trás-os-Montes and the reuse of sand-pit waste. He received his PhD in Geology from the University of Minho in 2013, with a geoarchaeological thesis using ground-penetrating radar in Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric contexts of northwestern Portugal.
He works in applied geophysics, mainly with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and unmanned aerial vehicles, in archaeology, geological prospecting and contamination detection, and studies microplastics in rivers and agricultural soils. He has taken part in interdisciplinary FCT-funded projects such as FMI 5000 (fluvial-marine interactions over the last 5000 years), ENARDAS and Diálogo entre Ciências, and in the EnvAgro project.
He directed the BSc in Geology (2018–2024) and has served on the Executive Committee of the Department and on that of the MSc in Geosciences.
