Summary

Maria Amália Sequeira Braga is a retired Associate Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences. Her research focuses on clay minerals, weathering and environmental geochemistry.

Her work covers the enrichment of trace elements in the clay fraction of mining soils, iron- and arsenic-rich nanoprecipitates associated with clay minerals in sulphide-rich waste dumps, the behaviour of rare earth elements, thorium and uranium in passive treatment systems for acid mine drainage, and the combined effects of fire and the natural environment on a building granite. She has also studied the use of natural clays to degrade pollutants in water treatment, pH determination in burnt soils and the preservation of dinosaur footprints in sandstone displayed in a museum.
