Summary

Pedro Pimenta Simões is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, where he has taught since 1988, and Deputy Director of the Department. He is a researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT) and at Lab2PT – Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory of the University of Minho. He graduated in Geology from the University of Coimbra (1987) and received his PhD in 2000 from the University of Minho and the Université de Lorraine, with a thesis on the emplacement, geochronology and petrogenesis of biotite granitoids associated with the Vigo–Régua shear zone.

He studies the petrology and geochemistry of granitic rocks, their emplacement and structure, and the geochronology of Variscan plutonism in northwestern Portugal. He also applies geology to archaeology, in topics such as the provenance of stone materials, megalithic monuments and Bronze Age salt production.

He headed the Department from 2006 to 2007, has served on its Executive Committee and on the Scientific and Pedagogical Councils of the School of Sciences, and coordinated the «Geology in Summer» outreach programme from 2006 to 2012.
